Writing a short film script requires the same skill set as writing a feature script. Both formats require an understanding of narrative structure, dialogue, conflict, character, screenplay format, visual storytelling, and the importance of development. When it comes to short film scripts, however, writers must tell their stories in a short amount of time and make each minute count. Which is why learning to write a short film script is one of the best ways to learn the craft of screenwriting before moving on to feature length scripts. With this in mind, this three-evening introductory course is designed to take you through the mechanics of short film scriptwriting and will cover the questions below:
- How to format your script.
- What makes a great idea for a short film.
- How to turn this great idea into a compelling script.
- How to set up the world quickly.
- How to use visual metaphor and motif.
Using samples of successful short films and exploring basic narrative structure, point of view, theme, protagonist, character development, tone and visual storytelling, Stéphanie will make sure that you have all the building blocks of a great short film script.
This course will combine theory and practical exercises. The writers will have the opportunity to develop their ideas from one session to the next.
EVENING 1 – 18th of Jan. – 18h30-21h30
Finding your idea and characters. Laying the tracks of your story. Creating a powerful story world. Defining your genre, theme, point of view and tone.
EVENING 2 – 25th of Jan. – 18h30-21h30
Designing strong characters that can be revealed through visual clues. Exploring your structure. Creating effective plot twists, outlines and beat-sheets.
EVENING 3 – 1st of Feb. – 18h30-21h30
Writing the script. Understanding visual storytelling, characterization, and the use of subtext in dialogue. Exploring your cinematic style.
At the end of each session you will be invited to pitch your own ideas and stories and discuss them with your classmates and the tutor to receive feedback.
This course is designed for:
- New writers who want to write a short film script for the first time or already have some experience writing short films but would like to deepen their understanding of the format.
- Writers who have experience writing in different formats and would like to get into screenwriting.
- Live action, animation, documentary, or experimental directors who aspire to write their own narrative short film scripts.

About the tutor:
Stéphanie Joalland began her career in story development at French studios TF1 International and Canal Plus then worked as a story editor for TF1 on prime time drama series and animated shows such as Emmy-nominated “Pet Aliens”. She created a Sci-Fi animated show for Luc Besson’s Europa Corp for Canal Plus “Time Jam: Valerian & Laureline”, based on a French comics now made into a movie by Luc Besson (“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”). She then moved to the U.S. to study producing, directing and screenwriting at UCLA where she graduated in 2008. Having gained experience in all aspects of filmmaking making short films she then set up her own production company in the U.K. Frenzy Films with fellow UCLA alumnus Sean McConville. Together they produced THE QUIET HOUR, a sci-fi drama Stéphanie wrote and directed, which premiered on Sky Cinema in the UK, sold all over the world including to the U.S., UK, Germany, Mexico, and China, was nominated for Best International Feature at Sofia International Film Festival, Best British Film at Raindance Film Fest, won Best Feature at Kansas City Film Fest and showcased at Newport Beach Film Festival. As a producer she’s currently in pre-production of THE LAST MOON, a psychological thriller with a supernatural twist to be directed by Sean McConville in the new year. Stéphanie is an alumna of Berlinale Talents and IFP Emerging Narrative Lab in NYC. She works as an advisor and mentor on the Raindance MA Film Program in association with Staffordshire University in England.
