If you want to make your first feature film there are no longer any excuses stopping you. Why? Because unlike a few short years ago you don’t need permission to direct, expensive film stock or specialised equipment. You don’t need millions of euros to direct. You don’t need an agent. You don’t need to have shot dozens of shorts, commercials, music videos, or directed episodes of TV shows. These days digital technology makes it significantly easier for aspiring filmmakers to make a film and showcase their talent to the world via the internet and launch their careers. In short, there are no excuses any more if making films is your dream .
What you do need is a screenplay designed to be made on a micro-budget, and a strategy to produce and direct your film. Frenzy Films did exactly that with their most recent micro-budget movie The Quiet Hour, which premiered on Sky Cinema in the UK and sold all over the world, including the U.S, Germany, China, and the UK. Now, we’d like to inspire you to do the same in this workshop broken into THREE IMPORTANT STEPS to help you launch your career as a filmmaker.
EVENING 1, STEP 1 – THURSDAY 23rd NOVEMBER – 18h30-21h30
WRITING THE SCREENPLAY
It’ll be a hundred times easier and a damn sight more likely to make your first feature film if it can made in a few weeks (or even a few days, like Coherence!) on a small budget with a small crew utilizing digital technology such as smartphones, or DSLR cameras.
Many of the most successful writer/directors in the world (Chris Nolan, Tarantino, Gareth Edward, etc) launched their careers by making a low-budget feature film. In recent years this is even more common with filmmakers making films with i-phones or DSLR cameras, editing on their laptops and the internet allowing the filmmakers to showcase and monetize the film on Vimeo, Youtube, iTunes, etc.
If you want to dramatically increase the chances of making your first feature film then the rules are simple: write a script with minimal characters, minimal locations, minimal FX. This model works whether you want to make genre films, comedy films, or drama films.
As preparation for the 1st class you’ll be asked to read a sample script that was made into a successful low-budget film to understand and learn how this model can work for your own projects.

* Finding the Right Idea for a low-budget movie.
* Preparation: Title/Tagline/Logline/Synopsis/Treatment/Step-outline.
* Writing the 1st Draft.
* A development plan.
EVENING 2, STEP 2 – THURSDAY 30th NOVEMBER – 18h30-21h30
You have a script and you’ve worked hard developing it. Now what? These days just having a script is not enough to convince investors to support your vision. You have to show your vision first. Not only to investors, but to cast, crew, and distributors too before they’ll commit. This is called pre-viz or pre-visualization.
We’ll show you how to how to create a poster, look-book, ripomatic, and a proof of concept short film to attract the talent and financing you need to realize your vision. We’ll discuss great examples of look-books, ripomatics, and proof of concept trailers other filmmakers have made (often for little or no money) and were good enough to convince investors, distributors, and the right creative team to get the film produced and distributed and launch their filmmaking careers.

EVENING 3, STEP 3 – THURSDAY 7th DECEMBER – 18h30-21h30
THE BIZ PLAN.
You have a developed script (Step 1). You have your pre-viz package (Step 2).
Step 3, the business plan (Biz Plan).
Even for a micro-budget film you need financing to feed the crew, hire equipment, and get you through post-production and you need a biz plan to get that money. No one will invest in your film (apart from maybe Aunty Ethel or Uncle Bob!) without a clear plan to show how you’ll not only spend the money to make the film, but how you’ll get through post-production and deliver the film to the marketplace. And most importantly, how the revenue of the film will be shared amongst shareholders so investors can clearly see how their investment can be returned with potential for profit.
With Steps 1, 2, and 3 undertaken you’ll be on your way to making your first feature film!

ABOUT THE TUTOR
Sean McConville is a working filmmaker based in London, Berlin, and Los Angeles. Sean began his career as an SFX technician on big budget studio features, including “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”, “Mortal Kombat” and James Bond movies “Goldeneye” and “Tomorrow Never Dies”. As a London native, Sean gained a Master of Arts Degree in Professional Screenwriting from the London College of Communications in London. After graduation Sean relocated to Los Angeles in 2002 to attend UCLA Film School. Sean graduated UCLA in 2004 and remained in Los Angeles until 2010, gaining experience and knowledge in all aspects of the film industry. Sean’s debut feature film as a Writer/Producer/Director, DEADLINE, starred Brittany Murphy and Thora Birch. Deadline was distributed in more than 40 countries around the world. Most recently Sean produced The Quiet Hour, which played at 25 International film festivals was distributed around the world, including in the U.S., UK, Germany, Mexico, and China. Sean’s currently in preparation for his next feature film as writer/director, THE LAST MOON, a thriller scheduled to be produced at the end of the year by Sean McConville & Stéphanie Joalland through their genre film production company, FRENZY FILMS.
